Abstruse Entity

Collaboration

The title Abstruse Entity reflects the difficulty in understanding the full impact of the High Speed 2 (HS2) project, as well as the government's and corporations' failure to grasp the consequences it will have on communities and their environments. This collaborative work between photographer Sam Buwer and designer Daniel Brooks responds to the disruption caused by the HS2 railway route.

The photography and layout of the book trace the journey of the new train line, documenting the towns and villages directly affected by the project. Over the course of a week, Sam visited each location, capturing the areas that will be destroyed to make way for the tracks. From playgrounds to graveyards, the images highlight the personal and emotional toll on both the people and the land. As a resident of one of these areas, Sam's connection to the project was deeply personal, motivating him to express his views and convey the significant loss through this visual documentation.
The book is a 120-page visual documentation of the towns and neighborhoods impacted by the HS2 project, representing just a small portion of the broader issues caused by its construction. The final pages feature a statement from Mark Kier, a Green Party activist from Hillingdon, which encapsulates the book's critique of HS2. His words highlight the project's wasteful nature, arguing that the vast sums of money spent on HS2 could be better allocated to addressing more urgent needs, such as funding for the NHS and other vital social and public services.
